How is your chosen industry regulated? Refer to your three main texts. (30)
This essay will explore how the newspaper industry is regulated with these newspapers being The Guardian, Daily mirror and the Oldham Evening Chronicle. The term regulation means to oversee and maintain order within a set of guidelines set placed forward by a regulatory body. Without regulation within the media content would seem to be inaccurate and create a false perception of a certain story and may become hugely inappropriate and offensive for the readers.
we see that both IPSO and the PCC regulate and manage complaints according to a set of clauses that outline the possible offences that the newspapers may get involved in for example from the sun may have broke clause 3 intrusion into someone's private life with the story and headline off web dates just want me for sex explaining about an individual who is sexual exploited.
Another example of where newspapers may have breached the regulations placed by IPSO is by the times with the headline off websites being taken down for £20 by cybercriminals, which suggests hackers charging for the removal of a website. this may have been a breach of clause 3 which is accuracy of the statement and the acknowledgement of printing false and inaccurate information. Finally we see where the Guardian had stated that drinking alcohol is less harmful than eating after the drink, which was claimed to be done by a group of scientists, this may be a breach of clause 1 which in turn is the accuracy of the printed material and stating inaccurate information
Newspapers follow a code of practise that can sometimes be underlined, for example the invasion of someone's private life, which can be claimed by the newspapers to be in the public interest in regard to the story, but sometimes the newspapers will be wrongly doing so as they think it is in the public interest but actually is just an intrusion of privacy
The second function of IPSO and before that the PCC was to deal with complaints that have been brought against newspapers. complaints can be made by any member of the public in which there is a valid reason with evidence to do so. For example The Guardian haven't been complained about since IPSO was set up in 2014 but before that a complaint was made them before with the PCC, this was brought forward in early 2014 by the England and Wales cricket club which was in regard to clause 1 accuracy. The outcome of this was that the Guardian changed what they said about one of the members of the cricket club. Another complaint was held late last year (2016) at aim of the times which was made by a member of the public and which claimed the newspaper in regard to several clauses: 1 accuracy 2 opportunity to reply, 3 privacy, 4 harassment, 11 victims of sexual assault and 16 payment to criminals. The outcome of this was there was a sanction and a publication of adjudication. Finally the Oldham chronicle early 2014 the PCC by Karen birch in regard to clause 1 accuracy in, to which the outcome of such event was that the newspaper printed a formal apology about the matter they had falsely printed.
The above is applied to newspaper but in regard to online versions of newspapers the regulation of comments put by the public cannot be fully regulated as comments can be argued to an opinion and is classed as freedom of speech to a certain extent, and can cause issues in regard to what people upload,
Regulation of the newspapers has good points first of which it stops unauthorised intrusions of newspapers from taking place, an example of which would be the phone hacking scandal in which the newspapers hacked the phones of families of dead soldiers to find out information, to which case now will make the newspapers accountable for what they have wrongly done. on the other hand without newspapers hacking in to people information there would have never been able to find out the truth about Jimmy Saville and how he sexual abused young children. so as a result regulation has come about due to the result of wrongly gathering information that had been claimed by the newspapers to be in the eye of the publics interest. Which directly affects them to now not breaching clauses emplaced by the previous PCC and to a new extent IPSO due to these scandals that the newspapers have caused, resulting in a complete overhaul of the regulation system
in conclusion this essay has explored how the newspaper industry is regulated and to what extent they have been regulated (IPSO). In my own personal view newspaper regulation of IPSO should be liquidated and moved to a new outlook which has shifted to the online community which is more interactive and as a second thought there shouldn't be regulation of these online as it is a freedom of speech right and wrong doings are down to your own moral decision
