Narrative assessment

Give three examples of the use of action codes are used in the film skyfall and explain how these help to tell the story (3)
An action codes which is shown in skyfall is when the character we later find out that is Miss Moneypenny says to M that she has shot Bond and he has fallen in to the river and which they presume he is dead, In  which M sighs and looks out of the window in fear that she has lost her best agent. Another action code is when M is sat in the church and in comes the Villain ready to kill her. The body language shows that there is no hope that she will live in the Fear of the villain killing her

Give Three examples of the use of enigma codes in skyfall and explain how these keep the audience engaged (3)
An engima code that was in the movie of skyfall, the mystery of whats of the hard drive, keeping the audience thinking about it all the film with the chases to find the hard drive. Another mystery of Silver esacping from MI6 and why did he necd to do so. the final mystery is why the people in the chinese Gambling house try to kill bond

Analyse the films narrative structure using a narrative theory, and argue which event in the film corresponds with each stage of the theory (8)
A narrative theory that could be fitted into skyfall could be Robert McKee theory which says there is 5 ways in which a film can play out.
The first being Inciting incident which would be in skyfall the opening scence where james bond is chasing this villain character through Marikesh to acquire the stolen hard drive
The next would be Progessive complications which could be a mixture of M losing bond but also the bombing of MI6 and them having to find a new base
The crisis in the film would be where Silver escapes from the new MI6 and is heading towards the meeting where M is to kill her. But also silver releasing the names of MI6 operatives
The Climax of these events would be when James Bond and M reach skyfall and they are holding down against silver and his team of elite soilders
Finally the Resolution would be when James Bond kills Silver by throwing a knife in his back

Explain how the narrative help to maintain audience engagement (6)
(clue - you will need to explore the films content as well as the devices outlined above)
In the film they try to keep the audience engaged by things such as enigma codes. The mystery of things such as whats on the hard drive, this keeps the audience guessing whats on the drive and how they are going to get it. action codes also play a role say for example when Miss Moneypenny shoots Bond and the look of M makes the audience try to show some way of empathy to what M must be feeling. Finally by leading to a climatic realease of tension through the exotic locations to when the action heats up and Bond is chasing Silver but also when he trying to kill Silver at sky fall.
it also makes the audience think of what lifestyle they could image to have such as Fast cars, lots of money and Nice clothing

  2. Literacy-
Take care with spelling and punctuation Declan, misuse of capital letters, spelling errors and grammatical errors in this answer.

Q1- Not bad examples, although there are only 2. The point with M's body language in the final scene when Silva confronts her in the chapel is that she is afraid of him and resigned to her fate (2)

Q2- Again, two reasonable examples but remember that an enigma is a riddle which is answered later, there is no enigma about why they are trying to kill Bond in the gambling house in Macau (not China), they are assassins following orders to kill the person who cashes in the chip (2)

Q3- Yes, a good response with good references to McKee's theory, an excellent answer might have looked for parallels with Todorov which could be used, but not as well as McKee's and acknowledged the 'epilogue' at the end of the film and the 'prologue' at the beginning. (6)

Q4- Too focused upon the content, enigma codes and the narrative. You needed here to discuss the generic appeal, the use of Daniel Craig and other famous and successful actors and the appeal they have for the audience as well as the appeal of the Bond franchise in general and the intertextual references for the knowing consumer with the other films in the franchise.

11/20. Grade D- in line with minimum target. Well done Declan
